︎︎︎ The Pyramid of Augmentation Framework
This Pyramid frames the thinking for the augmented age, where humans benefit from tight collaborations with machines. As we design for each layer of needs into our future experiences, we increase synergy and trust between humans and machine.

BRIEF

After IDEO's strategic investment in new data science capabilities, the EU design community felt compelled to share their perspective on AI and how they'd approach the topic with clients. Departing from the notion of AI as solely Robocops and Russian bots, they envisioned and brought to life a world where augmented intelligence enhances our understanding of one another.

PROCESS & OUTCOME

We curated an exhibition featuring five interactive machines, each posing intriguing questions about the role of AI in our lives. Visitors explored themes like purpose, empathy, buying decisions, and expertise through these thought-provoking experiences.

For instance, one machine, "The Purpose Compass," asked how AI could help us understand our strengths in a tech-driven future. Another, The Empathy Writer" explored the potential for AI to accurately convey emotions without losing nuance in translation.

These machines sparked engaging discussions during a talk at our Munich office, emphasizing the importance of AI addressing human needs. This project received recognition, winning a Core77 Design Award for Speculative Design and being named a runner-up for the Interaction Award 2019.

THE EXPERTISE TV

I was responsible for “The Expertise TV” asking: ‘What if a machine could surface gaps within an organisation’s knowledge, and prompt you to connect with people to answer them? To answer this, we created a fictional company called Petdrones inc.

Twist the knobs on the Expertise TV to explore Petdrone's portfolio, product stages, and contexts, revealing gaps in knowledge. If Petdrones hasn't tackled your parameters, print a receipt to seek help from others. The interactive machine, with knobs for Portfolio, Lifecycle, and Context, required meticulous individual work pre-Chat GPT era.

I created 86 Petdrone types and use cases, blending business cases, creative solutions, and user experiences. Collaborating with an industrial designer, we brought them to life in 3D.
